Together with sister Camille and husband Dylan, Anna Meloto-Wilk started Gandang Kalikasan Inc., a social enterprise that provides natural personal care products made from locally sourced raw materials and helps uplift the quality of life of Filipino farmers.
The social enterprise was set up in response to a growing need for all-natural, organic and Philippine-made bath and beauty products that are available at affordable prices. At that time, only affluent Filipinos could afford to buy organic products because they were very expensive and often imported.
“The Philippines is so rich in natural healing plants and herbs,” Meloto-Wilk shared to Devex. “Drawing on our experience as Gawad Kalinga volunteers, we set out to start a business that could open up a market for high value, natural personal care products that use locally sourced raw materials and help uplift the quality of life of poor Filipino farmers.”
Residents of Gawad Kalinga communities comprise nearly half of the company’s workforce. Organic raw materials are bought at fair trade prices from farmer cooperatives in seven communities all over the Philippines.
As president of Gandang Kalikasan, Meloto-Wilk is mostly involved in new product development, promotion of social entrepreneurship and Gawad Kalinga partnerships.
