As the world’s largest community of aid and development professionals, Devex is expanding its 40 Under 40 program in 2013 by honoring 40 global development leaders in the Metro Manila area who are under 40 years of age. These young leaders were selected based on their influence on the development agenda and impact on development results. The Manila 40 Under 40 awardees form an accomplished group of development professionals working in international organizations, the Philippine government, civil society, social enterprises and media.

Our goal is to highlight and celebrate the important work of the next generation of leaders in the global development community in Metro Manila. Awardees were honored at a formal event in Makati City on Feb. 19, 2013.

Selection Process

We sought leaders who are:

  • Impactful – making an observable development impact.
  • Influential – helping to shape the development agenda.
  • Manila-Based – must have professional connection to Metro Manila.
(So nominees working in Mindanao, for example, but with an office or business in Metro Manila are eligible. Foreign nationals are also eligible)
  • 40 or younger – as of Dec. 31, 2012.

The final selection of the Manila 40 Under 40 were made by a selection committee. This committee reviewed nominations made by the Devex community and used a scorecard to assess each nominee according to their influence on the development agenda and their impact on development results.

Fortunately, young leaders in our community are abundant. No list of this kind can be entirely accurate, and we are cognizant of the subjectivity that enters even a well-defined selection process. But we hope that by highlighting 40 young leaders in our community, we can encourage the development of more young leaders that we can celebrate in years to come.
